How Google picks the map pack top 3
When someone searches 'restaurants near me' or 'tacos Bentonville,' Google ranks the map results on three broad factors: relevance (does your profile clearly say what you are), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (reviews, photos, mentions and engagement). You can't move your building, so winning the pack means maxing the other two.
The five causes, in the order we actually find them
Running visibility audits on Northwest Arkansas restaurants, the same problems show up again and again:
- An incomplete profile. No menu link, no attributes, no hours updates, description blank. Google fills the pack with profiles it understands.
- Wrong or missing categories, 'Restaurant' alone when you should also be 'Mexican Restaurant,' 'Caterer' and 'Bar.' Categories are the strongest relevance signal you control.
- Stale or phone-quality photos, profiles with fresh, appetizing photography get dramatically more clicks and direction requests, and engagement feeds ranking.
- Low review velocity, a 4.7 average from two years ago loses to a 4.5 that earned thirty reviews this quarter. Recency and pace matter, not just the average.
- Inconsistent NAP, if your name, address and phone differ between your site, Facebook, Yelp and directory listings, Google trusts all of them less.
What you can fix this week
Claim and complete the profile: every field, every attribute, correct primary and secondary categories, hours including holidays, and your menu on a real webpage rather than a PDF. Then start asking happy tables for reviews, a QR code on the table or the check is the lowest-friction way to turn goodwill into ranking signal.
What takes 30-90 days
Photography, citation cleanup and review momentum compound over weeks, not hours. Google Business Profile improvements typically start showing in Maps within 30 days; competitive downtown markets can take longer. The key is measuring from a baseline, know where you rank for your five key searches before you start, so you can see exactly what moved.
That baseline is precisely what a visibility audit is for, and ours is free. If the audit shows the deeper problems. No real photography, no review system, a profile that was never built, the full rebuild is packaged in Foundation Lite rather than billed as an open-ended SEO retainer.
